Mark Sanchez says that the 2012 NFL season did not go as well as he had hoped.

Mark Sanchez has said that he did not play as well as he could have during the 2012 season.

The New York Jets quarterback was dropped from the starting lineup towards the end of the season, before regaining his place due to an injury to Greg McElroy.

The 26-year-old told the Jets' website: "It did not go as well as we had hoped, not what we expected.

"In my opinion, I underachieved and didn't play the way I'm capable of playing. Unfortunately, that led to some losses and things like that.

"I know we're destined for great stuff here, I know we can be successful here. That's what I'm focused on. I'm excited to come back next year and do my very best."

The Jets missed out on a place in the playoffs, finishing third in the AFC East with six wins and 10 losses.
