Antoine Bethea: 'Eric Mangini has new plans for defense'

San Francisco 49ers safety Antoine Bethea discloses that the club will have a new style of defense under new coordinator Eric Mangini next season.

San Francisco 49ers safety Antoine Bethea has revealed that new defensive coordinator Eric Mangini is planning to make their system more complex than in the past.

The 49ers have overhauled their coaching staff, with head coach Jim Harbaugh being replaced by Jim Tomsula and Mangini coming in for Vic Fangio.

Bethea has disclosed that Mangini will change the style of defense to confuse their opponents in the 2015 season.

"Coach Mangini, his thing is we're going to cause confusion," Bethea told reporters. "The opposing offense isn't going to know what we're going to be able to do each down.

"It could be bringing the pressure. It could be dropping eight into coverage. But it's just keeping the offense on their heels. However, you want to look at it, I think it's going to be a good deal for our defense."

The 49ers were ranked fifth in total defense in the 2014 season.
