Ray McDonald backs cut block ban

San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald backs calls for cut blocks to be banned by the NFL after an injury to teammate Ian Williams.

San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald has backed calls for the league to take action against cut blocks.

McDonald's 49ers teammate Patrick Willis urged the authorities to re-evaluate its stance on the tackles, which are currently legal, after seeing Ian Williams suffer a suspected broken ankle when hit by Seattle Seahawks offensive guard JR Sweeezy.

McDonald believes that it is time for the defence to get a bit of protection from the NFL following recent rules to improve the safety of quarterbacks and receivers.

"They have to do something about that. They're making all these rules for quarterbacks and receivers," McDonald told CSNBayArea.com.

"They got to find a way to protect the big fellas on the inside because a lot of dudes get hurt that way."

The 49ers have a 1-1 record at the start of the new season and will face the Indianapolis Colts in their next game on Sunday.
