San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke has revealed that the club are in the process of a contract extension with linebacker Michael Wilhoite.
The 28-year-old stepped up to become a regular starter in the club's defense last season following injuries to Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman.
Following the retirements of Willis and Chris Borland, the 49ers are keen to tie the linebacker's future to the club with a long-term deal.
Baalke told reporters: "We're working on something with him as we speak. He's kind of in a unique situation. He was kind of caught in a numbers deal."
Wilhoite recorded 87 tackles, one forced fumble and two interceptions in the 2014 season.
