Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Jesse Williams will undergo kidney surgery following the news that he was diagnosed with papillary type 2 cancer.

Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Jesse Williams will undergo kidney surgery after being diagnosed with cancer.

The 24-year-old has been diagnosed with papillary type 2 cancer and will have an operation immediately to fight the problem, and Williams has revealed his determination to overcome his health issues return to the field.

"Although disappointing, I am a fighter and will handle this," Williams said in a statement. "I am going to focus on my health and fighting this battle with a return to football as my ultimate goal."

Williams wrote on his Instagram page: "Fire is the test of gold; adversity of strong men. Appreciate the support from all over the world. Ready for what's coming. Recovery is up next."

Seahawks general manager John Schneider added: "Jesse is an extraordinarily tough individual who has overcome a great deal in his life and we will support him in any way possible. He is in our thoughts and prayers."

Williams was selected in the fifth round of the 2013 Draft, but has never played an NFL game because of knee injuries.
