Rudisha set the pace in the opening lap and was still ahead of his competitors with just 50m to go, but Amos made a late burst to overtake the reigning Olympic champion and threw out his arms in delight as he crossed the line.

Andre Oliver of South Africa edged ahead of Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich of Kenya to claim the silver medal.

Scotland's Guy Learmonth registered a PB (1:46.69) as he finished sixth, while Michael Rimmer of England finished a place further back.
