Liu Hong ends China's gold drought in Beijing

Liu Hong ends China's wait for a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing as the host nation finally secures a title.

Liu Hong won the women's 20km race walk at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing this morning to end the host nation's wait for a gold medal.

The 28-year-old pipped compatriot Lu Xiuzhi to first place in a time of 1:27:45 to finally produce a homegrown success story on day seven of the competition.

Victory represented Liu's first world title, having previously won two bronzes and a silver at this level in previous campaigns.

Lyudmyla Olyanovska of Ukraine won bronze in a time of 1:28:13 - one second clear of Portugal's Ana Cabecinha.

China have won six medals in total.
