Denise Lewis: "Greg Rutherford proved his critics wrong"

Greg Rutherford proved his critics wrong with victory at the Commonwealth Games, according to Denise Lewis.

Denise Lewis has claimed that Greg Rutherford proved his quality to his critics by winning long jump gold at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday night.

The 27-year-old added to his Olympic title with an emphatic victory in the final at Hampden Park, and Lewis believes that the achievement will be considered as important as his success in London.

"Greg Rutherford proved his critics wrong this evening," Lewis told BBC Radio 5 live. "2013 was a rough year for him and he's come through and delivered.

"I think tonight he was as happy with his gold medal as he was at London 2012. He's running well, jumping well but is mentally in the right place which is the most important thing."

Rutherford's England teammate Chris Tomlinson finished fifth in the final.
