Ennis in pole position after high jump

Jessica Ennis claims a 109-point lead in Istanbul after coming in third in the high jump event of the pentathlon.

Jessica Ennis has extended her lead to 109 points following the high jump event in the pentathlon at the Indoor World Athletic Championships in Istanbul.

The 26-year-old finished in third place after the second event, with Austra Skujyte in second and Yana Maksimava leading the high jump after reaching a height of 1.90m.

The British athlete cleared the opening height of 1.75m on her first attempt as well as the 1.81m and 1.84m.

Ennis stumbled on her first and second attempts of the 1.87m height and failed to secure the 1.90m after three tries.

The reigning champion remains on course for a gold medal, with the shot put event lined up in the afternoon session.
