Long jumper Greg Rutherford believes that he could break the British record for the 100m event.

Greg Rutherford has said that he could break the British record for the 100m if he focused on the track.

The 26-year-old won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in the long jump, but has a personal best of 10.26 seconds at the sprint event.

Rutherford told BBC Sport: "I think I could be one of the fastest sprinters in British history if I trained exclusively for the 100m.

"I'm probably not going to get the chance to do that as ultimately I have to stay a long jumper because that's what I do.

"But I think I can run quicker than a few that are around now and possibly cause an upset here and there."

18-year-old Adam Gemili currently holds the British record with 10.05 seconds.
