Discus thrower Traves Smikle has become the fourth Jamaican athlete this week to admit to testing positive for drugs.
The Olympian confirmed that the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) detected a banned substance in his urine sample, but denied knowingly ingesting one.
"As an athlete, I must take responsibility for whatever is found in my body; however I wish to state that I did not knowingly or wilfully ingest any banned substance," Reuters quotes Smikle as saying.
"Personally, I am very saddened and surprised by these findings, as I have never attempted to cheat and have always considered myself an ambassador for the sport and a strong supporter of drug testing."
The news follows reports that former world 100 metres record-holder Asafa Powell, Olympic 4x100m relay silver medallist Sherone Simpson, and fellow discus thrower Allison Randall also tested positive for banned substances.
Smikle has requested that tests be carried out on his 'B' sample and has vowed to cooperate with JADCO to resolve the matter.
Reports of a fifth athlete testing positive for performance-enhancing substances at the Jamaican trials are also in circulation.
