Great Britain's Barbara Parker produced a personal best run during the opening round of the women's 5,000m this morning.
The 29-year-old remained within the field for the majority of the race, setting a time of 15:12.81 in the process.
However, that performance was only enough for the California-based athlete to finish ninth, which means that she is unlikely to qualify for Friday evening's final.
Tirunesh Dibaba won the race in 14:58.48, while Meseret Defar, Viola Jelagat Kibiwot, Olga Golovkina and Julie Culley also qualified.
