Detroit Pistons kick off new season with win over Atlanta Hawks

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scores 21 points as the Detroit Pistons start the new season with a 106-94 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

The Detroit Pistons have started the new season with an impressive 106-94 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Atlanta finished last season with the best record in the Eastern Conference thanks to 60 wins, but they were short of their best on opening night as Detroit upset the odds at Philips Arena.

All five of Detroit's starters scored at least 15 points, with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope leading the way with 21 for the visitors.

Despite struggling with his shot early in the game, Andre Drummond dominated later on to record 18 points and 19 rebounds as the Pistons easily won the rebounding battle.

A strong finish to the first half helped the Pistons to a five-point advantage at the interval, and the Hawks never recovered from a third quarter which saw them outscored 34-23.

Dennis Schroder scored 20 points off the bench for the Hawks, while Paul Millsap registered 19 points and eight rebounds, but the home side were never able to put the pressure back on the Pistons in the closing stages.
