Amir Khan praises Virgil Hunter influence

British welterweight Amir Khan praises the influence of Virgil Hunter ahead of his fight with Devon Alexander in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

British welterweight Amir Khan has revealed that his lack of recent in-ring action has allowed him to work on improvements with trainer Virgil Hunter.

Khan linked up with Hunter after losing to Danny Garcia in July 2012 but since that defeat, the former Olympic silver medallist has competed on just three occasions.

However, after he impressed against Luis Collazo in May, Khan goes up against Devon Alexander in Las Vegas on Saturday night and the former WBA light-welterweight title holder has indicated that he is feeling good ahead of his showdown with the American.

At Monday's pre-fight press conference, Khan said: "Virgil has taught me to stay calm and remain at ease, to not look for the knockout early. We have been working on the offensive and defensive side of boxing. We've worked on a lot of things.

"I feel physically strong and very prepared mentally as well. I'm getting older and wiser, and every little bit helps you."

A win for Khan is likely to put him in contention for an opportunity to meet Floyd Mayweather Jr in May.
