Former British welterweight champ Lee Purdy retires after losing vision in eye

Lee Purdy announces his retirement from boxing after losing vision in his left eye.

British welterweight boxer Lee Purdy has announced his retirement from boxing after losing vision in his left eye.

The 27-year-old underwent a number of operations after injuring his eye during a fight with Leonard Bundu back in December 2013.

Due to the nature of Purdy's injury, the Essex-born fighter has decided to hang up the gloves following a career of 20 wins, five defeats and one draw in 26 bouts.

Purdy wrote on Twitter: "I wish I could thank you all personally for the support everyone has given me right through to the very end of my career. I would never have achieved what I did without the support from friends family and team. You all helped me on my journey to success.

"I'm feeling very humble. Thanks to all again and will see you all around #lightsout x"

Purdy won the British welterweight title in 2011 and his biggest fight came against Devon Alexander two years ago, but he lasted just seven rounds.
