WBA order Andre Ward, Carl Froch rematch

The WBA calls for 'super' champion Andre Ward and Britain's 'regular' title holder Carl Froch to begin discussions for a rematch later in 2015.

British super-middleweight Carl Froch has been informed by the WBA that they want him to face Andre Ward later in 2015.

Froch has held the organisation's 'regular' belt since defeating Mikkel Kessler in 2013, but Ward, who has only fought once since September 2012, is recognised as the WBA 'super' champion.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has previously queried why an inactive Ward remains in possession of that status, but it appears as though the WBA's attempts to be proactive with the situation has resulted in them calling for the two to meet for a second time.

Ward, rated as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, easily outpointed Froch when they met in Atlantic City at the end of 2011.

With Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in his sights, it is unclear whether Froch will welcome a second meeting with Ward, but the 37-year-old may be left with little option if he wants to remain in possession of his remaining world title belt after recently vacating his IBF strap.
