Qais Ashfaq bows out in Baku with Dzmitry Asanau defeat

British bantamweight boxer Qais Ashfaq exits the European Games after losing his semi-final bout 3-0 to Belarusian Dzmitry Asanau in Baku.

Great Britain bantamweight Qais Ashfaq has been forced to settle for a bronze medal at the European Games after losing his semi-final bout to Dzmitry Asanau this evening.

The 22-year-old rode the crest of a wave into his last-four contest, having lost just one round from his previous nine since the competition in Baku kicked off.

However, Ashfaq appeared to meet his match in Asanau, who was adjudged to have won all three rounds as the Belarusian proved too good for his English counterpart on the day.

Ashfaq demolished Omar El-Hag in the previous round to guarantee himself a bronze medal.

Asanau, 19, will meet Russia's Bakhtovar Nazirov in tomorrow's final.
