Joe Cordina through to quarter-finals at World Championships

Team GB boxer Joe Cordina is through to the quarter-finals of the World Championships after overcoming North Korea's Chol Guk Kwon in Doha.

Team GB boxer Joe Cordina has made it through to the quarter-finals of the World Championships after overcoming North Korea's Chol Guk Kwon in Doha on Friday.

The Welshman, who beat Australia's Joshua Keirl in his first bout on Wednesday, remained true to his style in the first round, despite Kwon proving a tricky opponent with his awkward style.

All three judges gave the first round to Cordina, who looked completely at ease. Kwon, knowing he was behind, came out firing in the second, but Cordina maintained his distance before picking off his opponent.

Kwon was given a warning at the end of the second for use of his head and it was another 10-9 across the board for Cordina, who was simply too quick and too smart. Kwon's frustration continued to grow in the third round as Cordina again dominated to take the bout on all three of the scorecards.

European champion Cordina, who has the 2016 Olympics in his sights, will fight Brazil's second seed Robson Donato Conceicao in the quarter-finals on Saturday evening.
