Australia's Steven Smith moves to top of ICC's Test batting rankings

Steven Smith becomes the first Australian since Michael Clarke in 2012 to move to the top of the ICC batting rankings.

Australia's Steven Smith has moved into the top spot of the ICC's Test batting rankings following recent displays against the West Indies.

The 26-year-old, who moved to number three in his nation's batting order during the ongoing series in the Caribbean, is the first Australian since Michael Clarke in 2012 to take the top spot.

Smith, who scored 199 in the first innings of Australia's second-Test win over the West Indies, has been the format's leading scorer over the past year with 1226 at 102.16.

Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara is second in the ICC rankings, while South Africa duo AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla sit third and fourth respectively.
