Australia took control of the second Ashes Test on day two in Adelaide thanks to a dominant display from the hosts.

Resuming on 273-5, Michael Clarke (148) and Brad Haddin (118) both recorded centuries in a sixth wicket partnership worth 200.

Ryan Harris struck a fluent 55 not out before Clarke declared with his side on 570-9 declared.

Mitchell Johnson removed Alastair Cook for just 3 in an impressive opening spell but Michael Carberry (20*) and Joe Root (9*) managed to survive the final few overs as England finished on 35-1.

Read below to find out how Australia dominated day two.

Hello everyone. Both teams had chances to take control of the second Test on day one but instead, we begin day two with things pretty even in Adelaide. The first session could decide which team has the best chance of winning this game.

Alastair Cook would have been pretty happy at the close of play but he knows that England could be in an even better position. The tourists dropped three catches yesterday, with Michael Carberry's error to hand Brad Haddin a life sticking in the head of every England supporter as they poured their cups of tea on Thursday morning. Will England live to regret those mistakes?

The cheers around the ground when Michael Clarke won the toss yesterday told us exactly how crucial first innings runs is going to be over the five days. It looked like Australia might bat England out of the game but the hosts still have work to do.

Australia will start the day on 273-5, with Clarke (48*) and Haddin (7*) at the crease for the hosts. Both players have great records on this ground and they'll be eager to guide their team to a big total.

What is a par score on this pitch? In the past 12 hours I've heard 500, 400 and 350. Take your pick. In truth, we won't know anything until both sides have had a bat.

England's bowlers did well after being forced to field first yesterday. James Anderson, Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar all claimed one wicket, while Stuart Broad continued his impressive start to the tour with 2-63. Ben Stokes showed some promising signs on his first day as a Test player.

All the talk after day one surrounded that drop from Carberry, who may have struggled to sleep after that mistake. However, plenty of credit should go to Cook for the way he managed his bowlers and the clever fields he set. He'll be desperate for a successful morning.

It's important to remember that it is a very, very god pitch for batting. Clarke looked in great form yesterday, while Haddin will be eager to punish England for handing him a life. Both players will score quickly if they get in again in the first session.

It's just over 10 minutes until the players and the umpires will be back out in the middle. England will probably be targeting two early wickets as they look to break this partnership and quickly see the back of the dangerous Mitchell Johnson.

There will be a minute of silence before the start of play in Adelaide following the death of Nelson Mandela. Both teams will wear black armbands in tribute to the former South African president. A nice touch following the tragic news that was revealed earlier this evening.

We've got a very intriguing session of cricket ahead of us. England will be hoping to keep the hosts to a score close to 350, but that will depend on how Haddin and Clarke bat.

An early wicket is top of the list for England. We'll know who is in control by the end of the day. The players are heading out to the middle now.

Every person inside the ground observes a minute's silence for the late Nelson Mandela, before a ripple of applause filters out following the tribute.

The umpires, spectators and players are ready for the action to resume. Australia start on 273-5. Broad will bowl the first over of the day. Clarke 48 Haddin 7*

Broad is too full at the start of the over and Haddin pushes the ball through the covers for a couple. Haddin hangs back in his crease to defend before miscuing a pull to Root at mid-wicket. Decent start from Broad.

Monty Panesar is thrown the ball to begin proceedings from the other end. He'll be eager to add to his one wicket from yesterday but both of these players are excellent against the spin.

50! Well, it's Clarke's half-century but he's very lucky not to be walking off as he slices the ball just over cover for a couple of runs. Strange shot from the Australian skipper, who salutes the Adelaide crowd. An easy single hands the strike to Haddin. Good over from Panesar.

Clarke gets a couple of runs at the start of Broad's over when a thick inside edge beats Bell at short-leg. There's been a few rumours that Clarke's back is playing up again today but he showed good pace there. Broad appeals for lbw. I'm not sure why, that would have drifted down leg even if there was six stumps. Clarke steals the strike with a single late in the over.

Shot! Clarke skips down the pitch to loft Panesar over mid-on for four runs. Is there a better player of spin in the world? It's a good response from Panesar as he keeps Clarke on the defensive for the rest of the over.

Broad is testing Haddin with the odd short ball as England look to find something on this pitch early in the day. The new ball is only 15 overs old. A couple of fuller deliveries are followed by a bouncer and Hadding does well to help the ball through fine-leg for four. Clarke 58* Haddin 13

Panesar is too full to Clarke, who clips the ball into the leg-side. Swann is the man doing the chasing but his foot touches the rope as he retrieves the ball, meaning Clarke picks up four. Shot! There's nothing fortunate about the next boundary as Clarke rocks back to cut four through point. A quick single follows to wide mid-on. Excellent batting.

First change of the day from Cook as Anderson is introduced to the attack. It's a good start for the seamer but he's punished for a slightly wider delivery when Clarke cuts again for four to take his team past the 300 mark. Positive signs for the hosts early on day two. Clarke 71 Haddin 13*

Great shot from Haddin as he smashes the ball straight back over Panesar's head for four. Prior pulls the spinner over for a quick chat as England look for that crucial sixth wicket. Haddin then plays the latest of cuts through third-man for a single. This partnership has reached 50 from 71 balls. England think there's a chance of a run-out late in the over but Carberry is off balance as he throws to Prior and Haddin sneaks through. Slice of luck for the hosts.

Clarke is in the mood today. England fans should be very concerned. The Aussie skipper finds the middle of the bat with ease as he blocks five balls before ending the over with a classy cut shot for four more.

Panesar's spell has come to an end as Swann is thrown the ball for the first time today. Haddin faces the spinner, who begins from around the wicket, and the batsman spots the turn early enough to nudge a single into the leg-side. Clarke cuts one just short of Panesar at point, before collecting a run to long-on. Haddin rotates the strike again and Clarke makes it four from the over with a single to fine-leg.

Not even a slip in place to keep Prior company as Clarke starts Anderson's over by picking up a run to square-leg. There's some good pace in the over from Anderson, but a lack of movement means Haddin is comfortable in defence. A push to mid-off brings a quick run. Australia cruising at the moment. Clarke 79 Haddin 21*

Swann is struggling to find the right line as Haddin easily works the ball into the leg-side for a run. Cook is beaten at leg-gully when Clarke rotates the strike again. The England skipper is trying to build pressure, but Australia take four from the over.

It's not easy being a bowler. Life is great when the ball swings all over the pace and the batsman doesn't know what's coming next, but pitches like this force the bowlers to be very patient. Clarke steers two runs through third-man before delighting the crowd with a textbook extra cover drive for four more. Clarke 87 Haddin 23*

Six! Root is helpless on the boundary at mid-wicket as Haddin slog-sweeps Swann for a maximum. A more traditional version of the shot brings a single to deep square-leg. Clarke then moves off Australia's unlucky number to claim his 88th run with a nudge into the leg-side.

No sign of Stokes yet, but his extra pace might be the key to a breakthrough. Clarke flicks a run off his pads. Close! Haddin gets the pull shot horribly wrong but the ball drops short of Panesar, who was sprinting in from the rope at fine-leg. Three runs are scored in the over. Frustrating times for the tourists. Time for a drinks break.

England are finding it difficult to build pressure because the host are batting with good intent against the spinners and the seamers. The tourists desperately need a breakthrough before the lunch break.

Clarke picks up a single on the leg-side at the start of Swann's over. Cook walks away from the discussions when Swann appeals for an lbw. Very optimistic from the spinner. Six! Haddin doesn't get all of this one but he collects six more with a top edge as he sweeps over square-leg. A single rotates the strike again. Chance! Clarke skips down the pitch but can only deflect the ball to short-leg, where Bell fails to take a difficult opportunity. Prior then goes for the run out but he misses. Clarke gets a life on 91 not out. Stokes is coming on now.

Stokes begins the over nicely but Haddin takes charge again with a superb back-foot punch for four runs. It gets even better later in the over as Haddin gets on top of the bounce to guide four more through third-man. Runs coming easily for the hosts.

Swann drops to one knee to ask Kumar Dharmasena to raise his finger but the umpires doesn't flinch. Just three singles taken from the over. This partnership is worth 101 from 142 balls.

Clarke is finding the gaps with apparent ease as he opens the face for two runs through third-man. Stokes produces a beauty to beat the outside edge but his only reward is an approving nod from the batsman. Clarke moves to 96 with a push into the off-side. Stokes beats the outside edge again when Haddin goes fishing with his bat. Clarke 96* Haddin 47

Broad does well at mid-off to restrict Clarke to a single. Haddin takes a risk when he chips the ball just past Pietersen at mid-wicket. Clarke once again takes advantage of the fielder at long-on to pick up another run. 50! Haddin flicks the ball through fine-leg to move to 51. It's been another vital innings from Haddin, who looks to be in superb touch.

Oh dear. What an awful moment for Stokes on debut. He produces a beauty to catch the outside edge and send Haddin packing. However, the umpires want to check the no-ball and a replay shows that the foot was over the line. Haddin is given a life and his innings continues. Everyone thought that was the breakthrough. It's frustrating, but Stokes does complete a good over.

Plenty of words exchanged between Stokes and Haddin at the end of the over. Has Stokes got in the experienced Aussie's head?

Clarke edges closer to three figures with a single down the ground. Haddin is pushed back in his crease by some good variations from Swann. One off the over. There's a lot of chat going on out there at the moment. Clarke 99* Haddin 51

CENTURY! The skipper does it again as he reaches his 26th Test hundred with a couple of runs through square-leg. It's been a stunning innings from Clarke, whose form is playing a big part in this series already. He's leading by example, again.

Swann has struggled for rhythm today, so Panesar is back into the attack from over the wicket. Clarke doesn't feel the need when the left-arm spinner pitches the ball well outside leg-stump. Panesar loses his length at the end of the over and Clarke drills four through the covers. 104 runs scored in the session.

Bless the Barmy Army. Not one wicket today, but they're still singing away in the corner of the ground. Decent pace in the over from Stokes but there's no threat. Three runs added to the total.

Shot! Haddin continues to attack as he lofts Panesar over mid-wicket for four. Poor bowling, in truth, as Panesar gets his line completely wrong to gift three byes to the hosts. England looking flat in Adelaide.

Swann is not having Panesar on the sweep. No chance. Cook sends Carberry over as a replacement before the over begins. There's an optimistic appeal for lbw when Swann finds some turn from around the wicket but it's not worth a review, decide England. Better from Swann. Maiden over.

Panesar isn't really looking for a wicket with the line he's bowling at the moment. Clarke isn't going to object, though. Just a few minutes left in the session now as the Australian captain plays out a maiden over.

LUNCH: Cook continues to keep one of his fielders at long-on as Haddin picks up an easy run. Clarke shuffles across his crease to add another single through mid-wicket. Swann completes the over and everyone walks in for a spot of lunch. Clarke 109 Haddin 56*

What a session for Australia. The hosts are in control thanks to an excellent partnership between Haddin and Clarke, who reached his 26th Test century in the first session of the day. England have a lot of work to do after lunch.

We'll join the players by taking a break during the lunch interval. Come back in 30 minutes for the second session.

Welcome back everyone. It's been a very good start to day two for the hosts. Clarke and Haddin have combined superbly to guide Australia to 389-5. England were pretty optimistic at the beginning of play but a score of 500 looks on for the batting team now.

England have had their moments but they've struggled to worry two players, who are both on top of their game. Stokes thought he had made the breakthrough but a no-ball saved Haddin. It's been that kind of day for the tourists.

Australia will continue to be positive. England have to find a way to threaten this partnership, or their chances of victory will fade very quickly.

The players are heading back out to the middle now. Will we see a big fightback from the tourists? They're yet to take a wicket today. Panesar starts the session with ball in hand. Clarke 109* Haddin 57

Panesar allows Clarke to cut through point for a single. Haddin plays a similar shot, but he picks out Stokes at cover. The 100th run off Panesar comes down the ground. Three of the over.

Anderson takes the ball from the other end. Clarke steers a single past Carberry at point. England's seamers have been reluctant to bowl too full, due to the lack of movement. Solid defence from Haddin. Clarke 112* Haddin 58

Panesar breezes through his over very quickly, conceding just one run. I'm surprised Cook hasn't turned to Broad at the start of the session. It could be worth bowling a spell of short stuff.

Good over from Anderson but he's not looking threatening, despite his eagerness to find some reverse swing. Cook needs to come up with a new plan.

Panesar is being a bit more positive coming around the wicket to Haddin, who seems to have got his mind right following a few strange shots earlier in the day. Prior continues to encourage his mates from behind the stumps. Maiden over.

Anderson drifts down the leg-side and Panesar is cheered as he restricts Clarke to two runs. A push into the off-side rotates the strike. Haddin is happy to deal in singles, too, as he nudges one to deep mid-wicket. Shot! Clarke's lesson in batting continues as he drills a perfect straight drive past Anderson for four runs. 400 up for the hosts.

Panesar changes his pace a number of times but Haddin is equal to the task and he picks up a run to long-off. Just a single from the over. It looks like Broad, who has bowled just three overs today, will return to the attack.

A short-leg and couple of men out on the hook, so Broad is putting the idea of short bowling out there. The seamer is full early on, with Haddin clipping a single to deep mid-wicket. Clarke frustrates the tourists with a lofted shot just over Pietersen's head ta mid-off as Broad surprises the hosting skipper with a decent short ball. It's still four runs to Clarke, who adds another to make it six from the over. The partnership is now worth 152.

Superb. There's no other word for it. Clarke skips down the pitch to loft the ball over extra cover and add four more to the total. Panesar isn't sure what to bowl at this stage. Five in total from the over. Australia cruising to a big score.

Cook is fielding at a very straight short mid-off position. I've got to be honest. England have used that position for years and I'm not sure a catch has ever been taken there. Maybe we're missing something. Clarke takes on the short ball and a top edge over Prior's head brings him three runs. Haddin drills the ball to Carberry on the boundary on the off-side for one. Clarke 133 Haddin 62*

Haddin pushes a single to long-off. Panesar, coming from over the wicket, allows Clarke to nudge a run behind square on the leg-side. Clever cricket from Haddin as he drops to one knee to sweep the ball past Pietersen to pick up four runs at the end of the over.

At this stage, Australia will be thinking about batting just once in this match. England simly cannot afford to miss out with the bat on this pitch. The hosts continue to do their business, with Clarke's stunning shot through third-man for four followed by single to deep square-leg.

Clarke reaches 2000 runs against England with a single on the leg-side. No fielder in the deep at mid-wicket, so Haddin drops to one knee to slog-sweep for four, before going one better by clearing the rope with the same shot a ball later. A single to deep cover makes it 12 from the over. Clarke 140 Haddin 78*

Broad's spell lasts just three overs as Swann returns. Haddin starts the over by slogging into the leg-side for a single. Clarke rocks back to steer the ball through third-man for three more. It feels like nothing more than a net session as Haddin adds another run late in the over.

There's a mix-up in the middle when Clarke charges towards Haddin, who isn't interested in a single after guidng the ball to Carberry at backward point. Dharmasena sends it upstairs but a replay confirms Clarke just managed to sneak his bat over the line before Panesar could whip the bails off. No luck for England. Maiden over. Time for a drink in Adelaide.

If you're English this hasn't been easy for you today, but you can't deny the class of Michael Clarke. He's certainly one of the finest players in the world at the moment and his record seems to keep improving.

Close! It's a rare ugly shot from Clarke as he hits the ball just short of Broad, who fails to reach forward far enough at mid-off. Four runs to the home skipper. Clarke rotates the strike later in the over. More misery for England. Haddin slog-sweeps again, this time for six runs. This is now the highest sixth wicket partnership in Tests in Adelaide. It's worth 200.

WICKET! CLARKE (148) C ANDERSON B STOKES

Finally, a breakthrough for England. Stokes gets his maiden Test wicket when Clarke delivers a leading edge to Anderson, who takes the catch diving forward at mid-wicket. Great moment for Stokes but the applause is for Clarke. His fantastic knock has given Australia the control.

The hard work isn't over yet. Mitchell Johnson, who did well with the bat in Brisbane, is the new arrival to the crease. He's off the mark with a single on the leg-side. Haddin opens the face enough to earn four through third-man. It's been a difficult day for England but Stokes won't forget that over. Haddin 90 Johnson 1*

Wow! Not many hit the ball harder than Johnson, who gives Cook a scare at cover when he drills four runs to the rope. Swann doesn't look like he's enjoying his job today.

England need another wicket quickly because these two will do damage very quickly. Haddin underlines that point with a superb shot over mid-on for four runs. Close! No slip in place for Haddin, who moves to 98* with a genuine outside edge past a helpless Prior. Haddin gets some luck.

WICKET! JOHNSON (5) C BROAD B SWANN

Important moment for England as Johnson miscues a lofted shot straight to Broad at mid-on. Swann has his second wicket of the innings and the tourists have exposed the tail now. Peter Siddle in next.

Siddle uses his feet to keep out Swann early on. Good over from the spinner. Wicket maiden. Haddin 98* Siddle 0

CENTURY! Haddin goes to three figures in style as he pulls Stokes through mid-wicket for four. He just loves batting at this ground and this innings has been crucial. Carberry's drop yesterday looks even worse now. Five off the over.

Haddin gets off strike early in a new over with a single through square-leg. Siddle takes a big risk sweeping a fuller ball but he gets off the mark with a couple of runs to fine-leg. Swann is keeping it tight at the moment.

Stokes is nudged into the leg-side by Haddin for one.

WICKET! SIDDLE (2) C PRIOR B STOKES

Excellent bowling from Stokes as he gets one to hold its line and catch Siddle's outside edge. Prior does the rest behind the stumps. Stokes has bowled very well, despite the difficult situation.

Harris is the new batsman and he's off the mark with a confident shot through the covers for two. It's another good over from Stokes. Haddin 105* Harris 2

Haddin slogs Swann to deep mid-wicket for a single. Shot! Harris knows what he's doing with the bat in his hand and he reaches the rope down the ground with a lovely swing of the blade. He steals the strike with a run to deep square-leg. Just under 20 minutes remaining in the session.

Harris attacks again, this time pulling Stokes over mid-wicket for four. The Durham all-rounder responds well to the challenge to deliver five dot balls in a row following the early boundary.

Haddin targets mid-wicket again but he fails to make contact with a big heave across the line. A nudge down the ground hands the strike to Harris, who is greeted by a leg-gully. Six! Harris ignores the attention around the bat as he takes Australia past 500 with a big shot over the rope at mid-wicket. Shot! Harris makes it two sixes as he finishes the over with another maximum on the leg-side. Superb striking of the ball. Haddin 107* Harris 23

Broad is back just before tea. Haddin gets off strike thanks to a leg-bye. Broad urges Kumar Dharmasena to give lbw when he strikes the pad but there's no movement from the umpire. Cook decides it's worth a review. The replay seems to suggest that the ball hit the pad first before clipping the bat. However, the third umpire decides that it's not clear enough to move on to Hawkeye. Strange few moments. Luckily for England, Hawkeye would have sided with Dharmasena. Three off the over.

Panesar begins his return to the attack with a full toss to gift Haddin a single down the ground. Poor from the spinner as he sends down a short one to allow Harris to cut through the off-side for four runs. Panesar responds with a beauty but a thick edge drops well short of Anderson. It's been a much better session for England. However, Australia are in charge.

TEA: England managed to take three wickets in that session but Clarke (148) and Haddin (108*) have guided the hosts past 500. Harris has also chipped in with a fluent 28 not out.

Clarke has delivered again for Australia. Could his century set up a victory for the hosts? England have a big challenge ahead of them from this position. They'll surely be batting at some stage in the final session of the day.

Not many teams win a game after conceding 500 runs in the first innings. England will know that much. They cannot afford another batting failure, or they'll be heading to a 2-0 deficit.

Around five hours ago, it was pretty even in Adelaide. Clarke's batting masterclass and Haddin's impressive knock means that Australia are firm favourites. It will be difficult to take 20 wickets on this pitch, though.

Clarke might think about declaring if they don't lose the final two wickets in the near future. He'll be eager to let Johnson have a go at some stage today.

Australia have taken advantage of the conditions today, it's that simple. This game will be decided by how England bat in their first innings.

The players have had their tea and they'll return in just a few moments. Australia will continue to attack as they look to pile on the misery before having a bowl later on.

Here we go then. We're ready for the final session of day two. Broad resumes with the ball in his hand.

Haddin flicks the ball off his pad to pick up a single. Harris fails to do the same when Broad goes straight again. Good start to the session from the seamer, with just one run being scored in the over. Haddin 109* Harris 29

Panesar is just trying to keep it tight as he lobs a few outside leg-stump. Haddin bites midway through the over, sweeping into the leg-side for one. Harris takes a couple of steps down the pitch but he holds back to collect a single on the off-side. Haddin then cuts to deep cover for two more. Six! The slog-sweep arrives again as Haddin clears the rope on the leg-side for the sixth time in this innings.

A worker for Hotspot, who is paced on the boundary, caught the ball in one hand when Haddin cleared the rope in the previous over. Who watched on from just a few feet away? That's right, Mr Carberry. That's how you catch Haddin. Broad drops one too short and is punished for a wide. Harris then rotates the strike with a single to deep mid-wicket.

WICKET! HADDIN (118) C PRIOR B BROAD

Haddin attempts the cut but he can only deliver a bottom edge to Prior, who takes a good low catch to end a fantastic innings. The 36-year-old fully deserves the standing ovation. That was a superb knock. No sign of a declaration as Nathan Lyon walks out to the middle.

Broad now has figures of 3-92. It's not been easy, but he's still impressing on this tour. Lyon keeps out the first ball. Harris 31* Lyon 0

Harris chips the ball over cover for a couple, before rotating the strike by cutting for a single. Darren Lehmann, looking on from the boundary, must be a very happy man at the moment. Three from Panesar's over.

Harris picks out the fielder on a couple of occasions early in the over but he finds the gap with a brilliant pull shot to collect four runs. A nudge into the leg-side earns Harris a quick single. Broad pleads with Dharmasena to raise his finger when he strikes the pad but Lyon survives.

A cut to deep point hands the strike to Lyon at the start of the over. Carberry is forced to do the chasing in the deep but he can't prevent Lyon from reaching the rope with a good sweep shot. Another lbw appeal is launched by England. I think Panesar knew Lyon was outside the line there. Harris 40* Lyon 4

Harris is happy to give the strike to Lyon again as he picks up another early single. Lyon's defensive technique is pretty good, which will annoy Broad. Just one from the over.

Panesar starts his 44th over by conceding two runs to Harris on the leg-side. A skip down the pitch is followed by a nudge to long-on for one. Lyon rotates the strike again with a flick off the hip. Shot! Harris slogs again to pick up four more and move to 48*. Will his half-century bring a declaration?

Anderson is back for a new spell as England look for a way to wrap up this innings. Lyon plays the over very smartly as he chooses the right deliveries to leave alone. A single to fine-leg is the only run from the over.

Changes at both ends as Swann comes back on. Lyon rocks back and cuts the ball past slip for three runs through third-man. 50! Great shot from Harris to pick the gap on the off-side and reach his second Test half-century from just 53 balls. His confidence continues to grow as he paddle-sweeps three more to fine-leg. Six! Lyon records the 12th maximum of the innings with a huge slog-sweep over mid-wicket. Swann's over brings 18 runs. Harris 55* Lyon 17

DECLARATION: Clarke decides that's enough fun for now as he brings Harris and Lyon back inside. Australia declare on a massive 570-9. England need to bat sensibly and positively. It's going to be a tricky final spell for the tourists.

It's a flat pitch. We all knew that much but it's still be an excellent effort from the hosts, with contributions being made all the way down the order. They're in control now and they'll be desperate for wickets before the close of play.

England's bowlers will be exhausted. They've stuck to their task well but those dropped catches yesterday have ended up making a big difference.

Australia hold all the cards at the moment. They'll know how important an early breakthrough will be, though. It's still a good pitch for batting and England should be targeting a big score in their first innings.

Johnson, Harris and Siddle are out in the middle. It won't be the same as Brisbane, but they will all be full of confidence. England know they are in need of a good start as Carberry and Cook walk out to the middle.

Big test for the tourists now. Cook starts the innings on strike, with Carberry waiting patiently at the other end. Johnson will bowl the first over. Three slips and a gully for the left-arm pace bowler.

The first delivery is clocked at 92mph. Ease into it, Mitchell. Despite the pace, there's not much carry through to Haddin behind the stumps. Cook has a moment of madness when he misses a wider on. Johnson gets up to 95mph at one stage in the over. A no-ball is followed by a risky leg-bye from England's openers. Carberry ducks a bouncer, before getting off the mark with four when Johnson gets his length wrong. The pressure is on.

Harris takes the new ball from the other end. Cook gets off the mark with a firm push through extra cover for three runs. Carberry stays watchful outside his off-stump to see out the rest of the over.

Unless you're an England batsman, it's always enjoyable to see such quick bowling. Cook keeps a straight one out but he plays and misses again outside off-stump to excite the Australian fielders.

WICKET! COOK (3) B JOHNSON

Perfect. Adelaide goes crazy when Johnson beats the England skipper for pace to knock back the off-stump. That's a superb delivery. It's also a very big moment in this Test match. Joe Root, in his new position, will be the next batsman out there.

It's a big challenge for Root but his confidence will grow very quickly if he can make a score in this innings. Johnson completes a wicket maiden.

Haddin gasps as he takes the ball from Harris but Carberry pulled his bat away at a good time there. Harris, at 88mph, is hardly a medium pace bowler but we've been treated to some quick stuff from Johnson. The pressure continues to build. Maiden over.

Early bouncer for Root, who handled the short bowling pretty well in Brisbane. A solid block is followed by a loose swing outside off-stump as Johnson comes close to claiming another wicket. Root then gets off the mark with a single on the leg-side. Carberry is only playing when he needs to at the moment. Carberry 4 Root 1*

Harris finds a perfect line outside off-stump to creep past Root's outside edge. The Yorkshire ace is always keen to hang back in his crease but those pokes away from the body will be the death of him against Australia's opening bowlers. Much better defensive shots on show late in the over. Maiden.

Fair play to Carberry, who keeps out the full one and avoids a couple of sharp bouncers impressively. Johnson will probably be given a rest after this over as Clarke looks to manage his bowlers. Carberry picks up a single with a clip off his toes. That's the only blemish on the over.

Nice move from Clarke as he turns to Lyon with the ball only seven overs old. How England play the spinner is going to be very important. There's some early turn but an lbw appeal is quickly rejected due to height. A thick outside edge allows Carberry to sneak to the other end. Root sits back to nudge a run through fine-leg. Carberry 6 Root 2*

Peter Siddle is on to replace Johnson. It won't be as fierce from the third seamer, but his accuracy will be a big weapon for the hosts. Root gets trapped on the crease and his feet are nowhere as he just misses one outside off-stump. Maiden over from Siddle.

Carberry hammers a cut shot straight to a fielder on the off-side. Lyon is giving the ball plenty of flight as he looks to find the demons in this pitch. Carberry is beaten by a beauty when Lyon gets some extra bounce. Tricky times for the tourists.

England aren't going anywhere at the moment. They need to keep the scoreboard ticking over or the pressure will keep on building. Siddle has found his line and length. It's another maiden over.

Shot! Carberry breaks the run of dot balls by drilling a shorter delivery through the off-side for four runs. A second boundary follows later in the over as the Hampshire opener sits back to pull through mid-wicket. The bad balls must be punished. Carberry 14 Root 2*

Siddle concedes his first runs when Root clips a couple into the leg-side. Close! An outside edge drops short of Clarke at second slip and Root picks up two more. England need this pair to still be out there tomorrow.

Carberry is looking more comfortable against the spin now as he leaves well outside off-stump throughout Lyon's over. Just a couple of runs added past point.

Root's foot movement is starting to become a concern as Siddle sends another one past the outside egde. It's good bowling from the seamer. One run added.

Root sits back to nudge Lyon into the leg-side for a single. Carberry drops to one knee to sweep four runs as his confidence begins to grow at the crease. Much better cricket from England. Carberry 20 Root 8*

The crowd reacts again as Johnson returns to the attack. Root is pushed back by the extra pace but he looks much more comfortable defending from that position. It's a maiden over.

Close! Harris returns for his own second spell and he's not far away from a wicket when an inside edge of Carberry's bat drops short of Smith at mid-wicket. Plenty of staring from the big seamer but no words from Carberry.

Change of angle for Johnson as he comes around the wicket to bowl at Root, who isn't interested in taking any risks at this late stage. The pace is still very good from Johnson. Clarke is shouting encouragement from second slip. He'd love a second wicket here. Ouch! Root fails to pick the bouncer and he takes a blow to the chest. Johnson follows that with a beauty to beat the outside edge. Great bowling.

Just two overs left in the day. There's a short-leg in place for Harris, who comes around the wicket at the start of a new over. Carberry just manages to avoid edging one outside off-stump. It's another maiden over.

Johnson is being urged on by the crowd in the final over of the day. Root is confident on that back foot, so Australia's left-arm seamer needs to be a touch fuller. A no-ball means Root has an extra delivery to survive. Johnson switches angles midway through the over. Close! Moment of madness from Root as he calls for a risky single. Carberry is quick, but he would have been gone had Rogers struck the stumps from cover. Carberry then survives a hopeful lbw appeal. These two will be back tomorrow.

CLOSE OF PLAY: It's been a tough day for the tourists. Australia deserve to be in control following a superb display of batting from Clarke and Haddin. I've just found out that it could have been even better. If Clarke would have reviewed that lbw decision in the final over, Carberry would have been given out by Hawkeye. Big stroke of luck for England. Carberry 20* Root 9*

It's Australia who are in complete control of this match now. England need to come out firing tomorrow as they look to chip away at a deficit of 535. Cook's dismissal is a big blow, but there can be no more excuses for this batting lineup.

The day belongs to the hosts. Clarke, Haddin, Harris and Johnson have all impressed. Can they put England under even more pressure tomorrow?

Thanks for joining me on day two. Make sure you're here at 11.30pm later today for more live coverage. Goodbye.
