Australia have continued to wreak havoc among the England batting order after lunch on day two of the fifth Ashes Test match in Sydney.
Michael Clarke's side reduced the tourists to 61-5 in the morning session, with Mitchell Johnson and Ryan Harris doing the damage once again at the SCG.
Gary Ballance (18) and Ben Stokes resumed at the crease in the afternoon, but the former only lasted one over after the resumption as Nathan Lyon had him caught behind by Brad Haddin.
The next man to go was Jonny Bairstow (18), as he was caught by George Bailey at mid-on when attempting to drive Peter Siddle to the boundary.
Stokes (47) steadily made his way towards his half century, but fell three runs shy after leaving Siddle's straight delivery, which clattered into his stumps.
Stuart Broad then took the attack to Lyon, hitting a six and a four in an over worth 13 runs as England desperately tried to avoid the follow on.
Harris then claimed Scott Borthwick as his third victim, with the debutant edging to Steve Smith at third slip, meaning two runs were needed to avoid the follow-on with just one wicket in hand.
A big drive from Boyd Rankin took England past the 127 target, which was greeted by ironic cheers around the SCG.
He and Broad (30) got to 155 with a few boundary slogs, but the innings came to a close when Clarke brought Johnson back on.
The fast bowler uprooted Rankin's (13) stumps to leave England trailing by 171 runs.
