England lost two wickets in the afternoon session as the tourists continued to edge towards avoiding an innings defeat.
Samit Patel and Ian Bell both fell lbw to Umesh Yadav with England on 199 in quick succession.
Opener Alastair Cook has moved on to 138, with Matt Prior steadying the ship on 40.
