Ian Bell says England's performance in the first Test against South Africa was not good enough but believes that the team can turn the series around at Headingley.

Ian Bell has said that the England team are confident of turning around the Test series against South Africa.

Proteas condemned England to their fifth defeat in nine matches at The Oval to take a 1-0 led in the three-Test series.

Bell acknowledged that the Three Lions' performance was not good enough but has backed his teammates to come out fighting at Headingley on August 2.

"In the next two Tests, we have to go out and fight for every run and wicket and try to hold on to number one," said Bell. "We're all very proud we've got to number one and we definitely want to stay there for a long time.

"We know this defeat wasn't good enough but we must not divert from the things we have done well in recent years. We're confident we can get back in the series.

"There's no doubt that, if we play the cricket we're capable of, we can beat South Africa."

The series winner will be ranked as the number one Test nation.
