Ben Stokes's first day as captain of England failed to produce a change as his team collapsed against New Zealand's bowlers during the closing session of day one of the first Test.
With Stokes having replaced Joe Root as skipper, there was optimism that a fresh approach would act as the catalyst for improved fortunes with bat and ball.
England got their wish with the latter - bowling New Zealand out for just 132 - but the home side were 116-7 at stumps after initially reaching 59 without loss.
Despite losing the toss, England dominated the opening exchanges, the returning James Anderson striking twice as he showcased his effectiveness with the new ball at Lord's.
However, after Jack Leach was forced off the field and out of the game with possible concussion, debutant Matty Potts took centre stage, his first Test wicket being the prized scalp of Kane Williamson.

In helping reducing New Zealand 102-9, Potts had set up the opportunity to bag a five-wicket haul, but the pace bowler soon joined Leach in being forced off the field through injury.
Stokes claimed the final wicket of the innings, leaving Colin de Grandhomme unbeaten after a resilient 42, with Anderson (4-66) joining Potts (4-13) in taking four wickets apiece.
The performance of the bowlers set England up to seize control of the Test match, and Alex Lees and Zak Crawley put together an encouraging 59-run opening stand off 13.5 overs.
Crawley went for 43 off 56 balls off the bowling off Kyle Jamieson, but a collapse did not look to be around the corner even when Ollie Pope (7) and Root (11) failed to stick around to partner Lees.

However, 92-3 became 100-7 in less than five overs, Lees (25) soon being followed back to the pavilion by Stokes (1) and Jonny Bairstow (1).
Despite his earlier injury, Potts made it out to the crease to last just two balls as Trent Boult joined Tim Southee and Jamieson in taking two wickets each.
To the credit of Ben Foakes and Stuart Broad, they put together 16 runs off the final 19 balls of the day to at least ensure that England were on a par with their opponents after a chaotic day, trailing by 16 runs with three wickets remaining.
That also allowed Matt Parkinson more time to settle into his new surroundings, the Lancashire spinner starting the day in Manchester and ending it in the England dressing room after being drafted into the side to replace Leach.
