England claim a nine-run victory over India in the first game of their five-match ODI series.

England have beaten India by nine runs in the first of five one-day internationals between the two sides.

England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and chose to bat first, a decision which proved fruitful as both he and Ian Bell cruised to fifties, putting on a first wicket stand of 158 before Bell was finally run out for 85.

Cook followed soon after for 75 having been caught by Ajinkya Rahane off Suresh Raina's bowling.

Eoin Morgan and Kevin Pietersen both fell just short of half-centuries, claiming 41 and 44 respectively before England finished their innings on 325-4.

India began their chase well, racing to 96-0 before James Tredwell claimed the wickets of Rahane (47) and Gautam Gambhir (52) to leave India 102-2.

Yuvraj Singh and Raina also reached half-centuries before being dismissed by Tredwell, who finished the match with four wickets to his name.

Jade Dernbach and Tim Bresnan also claimed two wickets apiece, while Steven Finn weighed in with one of his own as India's tail order tried to hit 27 in the last two overs.

They could only manage 18, however, as India recorded a score of 316-9 to give England a 1-0 series lead.
