However, they were unable to build a high-scoring innings as they lost their remaining eight wickets in the morning session to end with a total of 153.
With the home side having declared on 631-7, captain MS Dhoni opted to enforce the follow-on.
The Windies fared better the second time around, ending the today's play on 195-3.
They head into day four of the Test still trailing India by 283 runs.
