Ahead of Thursday's encounter in Wankhede, India had already all but assured their place in the semi-finals, but that was confirmed with one of the most dominant performances in the history of the tournament.
After the hosts made 357-8 from their 50 overs, Sri Lanka were dismissed for 55 in just 19.4 overs, realistically ending any feint hopes that they may have had to reach the last four.
When Rohit Sharma departed for a two-ball four, Sri Lanka's decision to put India into bat looked inspired, yet they soon realised that they faced an uphill task.
Shubman Gill (92), Virat Kohli (88) and Shreyas Iyer (82) - the latter hitting six maximums in a 56-ball knock - all starred with the bat.
Ravindra Jadeja made 35 from 24 at the end of the innings as India set Sri Lanka 358 to win, with Dilshan Madushanka the pick of the bowlers with figures of 5-80.

In sharp contrast to the fast start that Sri Lanka, they found themselves on 3-4 as none of their top five batsmen scored more than one run.
Such was the panic that Charith Asalanka made just one off 24 deliveries as Mohammed Siraj (5-18) ran riot, with his work complemented by Jasprit Bumrah (1-8) and Mohammed Shami (3-16).
Sri Lanka were indebted to Angelo Mathews (12), Maheesh Theekshana (12*) and Kasun Rajitha (14) all reaching double figures to prevent their nation from putting together the worst innings in Cricket World Cup history.
While India have guaranteed a place in the top three of the standings, Sri Lanka are seventh with just two matches remaining and a negative net run-rate.
