South Africa hammer New Zealand

South Africa beat New Zealand by an innings and 27 runs in the first Test in Cape Town.

South Africa have beaten New Zealand by an innings and 27 runs in the first Test in Cape Town.

The victory was achieved just before tea on day three, when the tourists were all out for 275.

New Zealand, who had been dismissed for just 45 in their first innings, were again unable to cope with the bowling attack of the world number one side.

Dale Steyn claimed three wickets and a run-out, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander took two each, while Robin Peterson and Jacques Kallis also got in on the act.

Dean Brownlie attempted to keep things respectable for the Black Caps with a steady knock of 109 off 186 balls.

His time at the crease came to an end when he was caught by Peterson off the bowling of Steyn.

Captain Brendon McCullum had earlier reached 51, before being trapped lbw by Peterson.

The win was sealed when Chris Martin was run out without facing a single ball.
