Chris Read, Steven Mullaney sign new Nottinghamshire deals

Long-serving skipper Chris Read and all-rounder Steven Mullaney sign new contracts at Nottinghamshire.

Long-serving captain Chris Read and all-rounder Steven Mullaney have signed new contracts at Nottinghamshire.

Former England wicketkeeper Read, 36, has extended his 16-year-long stay at Trent Bridge until 2016.

He stood down as one-day skipper last season to concentrate on first-class cricket and responded with 877 runs at an average of 43.85, and 54 catches.

"At this stage in my career I do take it year by year," Read told reporters. "But I'd like to play on for the next two seasons as a bare minimum."

Director of cricket Mick Newell said: "He's a key player for us and still leads the way in his approach to matches and training.

"He has a lot of cricket left in him and I fully expect him to sign a further extension when the time is right."

Mullaney, who arrived from Lancashire four years ago and has since developed into a key limited-overs player, has committed himself to Notts until the end of the 2017 season and has silverware in his sights.

"This is a really good team and I can see us going on to win trophies in the next few years," he told reporters. "I wanted to be a part of that, and a part of Nottinghamshire."

Newell added: "He has a big role to play in white-ball cricket and he's determined to fight for his place in our Championship team."

The 28-year-old was named the club's Player of the Year in 2013.
