The Australian international smashed 37 off just 18 balls at the end of the Stars' innings to help them reach 200-5 from their 20 overs at the SCG.
David Hussey topscored for the visitors with an unbeaten 50, while Luke Wright and Matthew Wade also chipped in with 28 and 36 respectively as star-studded Melbourne posted a commanding total.
Sydney gave themselves a chance of chasing it down as Michael Lumb (29) and Nic Maddinson (19) put on 49 for the first wicket, but they then lost eight wickets for only 74 runs and ended up finishing 123-9.
Maxwell was the pick of the Melbourne bowlers, dismissing Sixers captain Moises Henriques on his way to recording figures of 3-26 from his four overs, while he also ran out Marcus North as part of his fine individual display.
The Stars are early leaders at the top of the table having become the only side to win their first two matches, while Sydney have won one and lost one of their opening two fixtures.
