Royal Challengers Bangalore edge out Mumbai Indians

The Royal Challengers Bangalore defeat the Mumbai Indians by two runs in their IPL opener.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore have started the Indian Premier League season with a narrow two-run victory at home to the Mumbai Indians.

An unbeaten 92 from Chris Gayle helped the hosts to a score of 156-5 from their 20 overs.

In response, Mumbai posted 154 runs for the loss of five wickets in what was a thrilling finish.

Gayle reached his personal tally off 58 balls thanks to 11 fours and five sixes, while Virat Kohli made 24 before he was bowled lbw by debutant Jasprit Bumrah.

The youngster took a further two wickets, but failed to get out Arun Karthik, who ended on 19.

Dinesh Karthik did most of the damage with the bat for the Indians as he made 60 before he was caught off the bowling of Vinay Kumar.

Ricky Ponting (28) and Sachin Tendulkar (23) also contributed with the bat, but Kieron Pollard (5) and Harbhajan Singh (1) fell agonisingly short of the total required for the win.
