A century from Virat Kohli has seen India finish on 255-5 on day one of the first Test against South Africa in Johannesburg.

The tourists, who are playing the first of two matches against the Proteas, won the toss and put themselves into bat before losing two wickets at lunch.

India ended the morning session on 70-2 after Shikhar Dhawan (17) and Murali Vijay (6) were dismissed by Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel respectively.

However, Kohli made 84 before tea as the visitors got themselves to 164-4 following the further losses of Cheteshwar Pujara (25) and Rohit Sharma (14).

Pujara was run out cheaply while Sharma was caught behind by AB de Villiers off the bowling of Vernon Philander.

Kohli was finally bowled by Jacques Kallis during the final session of the day with a knock of 113 that included 18 fours.

Ajinkya Rahane (43 not out) and MS Dhoni (17 not out) will resume at the crease for India on Thursday.
