An innings of 121 from Dean Elgar has helped South Africa gain the advantage over West Indies after the opening day of the second Test match at Port Elizabeth.
Despite losing the toss, South Africa began well by coming through the opening 10 overs without losing a wicket, before Alviro Peterson departed for 17 after being caught off the bowling of Shannon Gabriel.
The dismissal brought Faf du Plessis to the crease but he played second fiddle to Elgar, who eased his way to his half-century as the hosts moved into three figures.
The run-rate was slow but South Africa were keeping wickets in hand and Elgar and Du Plessis took their partnership past 100 as they reached tea on 157-1.
When the players returned, Elgar required 15 runs for his third Test ton but the 27-year-old wasted no time in making three figures as his second-wicket stand with Du Plessis began to creep towards 200.
However, after reaching 121, Kenroy Peters struck to remove the opener on 226-2 but the scoring wasn't over for the day as Du Plessis and Hashim Amla added another 44 runs to the total.
Du Plessis was keen to secure his century before the close of play but he was left agonisingly short after reaching 99 when the umpires called time on Friday's action with South Africa on 270-2.
