Anna Meares named Australia's flag bearer for Commonwealth Games

Anna Meares is confirmed as Australia's flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

Anna Meares has been named as Australia's flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday night.

The 30-year-old cyclist, who has won six Commonwealth medals in her career, revealed that the honour left her feeling emotional after being given the role by Australia's chef de mission Steve Moneghetti.

"I'm always emotional. I think that's just the sort of person that I am," Meares told members of the media. "Being a sprinter as well we're pretty emotional creatures, but I just never thought I'd get the chance.

"I think it tells me I've done a really good job in my career so far. I'm a good team-mate and I'm a good leader, and sometimes it's not all about being successful, it's about bouncing back from defeats and failures and challenges."

Meares will compete in the 500m time trial and the track sprint in Glasgow.
