Stephanie Morton has heaped praise on compatriot Anna Meares, dubbing her the "queen of track cycling" after she picked up yet another gold medal at the Commonwealth Games this evening.
Meares became Australia's most successful female track cyclist of all time with her fifth gold at the Commonwealths, edging out Morton to win the top prize in the 500m time trial.
Following the Australian one-two, Morton paid tribute to her training partner, who won the event for the third consecutive time at the Commonwealth Games.
"You couldn't ask for a better training partner. She's Anna Meares, she's the queen," Morton told reporters.
"We were having a joke today because the Queen was in the dining hall for lunch and everyone was like 'the Queen's here, the Queen's here!' I said 'Anna's here every lunchtime guys'. She is the queen of track cycling, so you can't really ask for a better role model than her.
"She's not our only senior athlete, we've got Shane Perkins as well. He's also one to lean on - he's got loads of experience and he's always happy to help. I think between Anna and Perko we've got a really good leadership group."
England's Jess Varnish picked up the bronze medal in the event.
