Australia edge tense road race finale

Australia's Steele von Hoff claims gold after an arduous men's road race at the Commonwealth Games.

Australia's Steele von Hoff has claimed gold after a tense finish to the men's road race at the Commonwealth Games.

After almost four hours of riding the 168.3km course on Currumbin Beachfront, nine riders all finished within the same second of each other in a mad scramble to reach the podium.

Von Hoff suffered a broken spine just two months ago but completed a remarkable recovery to still participate on the Gold Coast and was deemed first past the finish today with a time of 3:57:01.

Wales's Jonathan Mould was awarded the silver medal, while South Africa's Clint Hendricks edged Mark Downey of Northern Ireland for the bronze.

England's Thomas Stewart led entering the final lap but could only finish eighth among the huddle that went across the finish line.

Elsewhere, Aussie favourite Cameron Meyer, who won the time trial on Tuesday, was forced to settle for ninth.
