Alex Dowsett rides to gold for England in men's time trial

England's Alex Dowsett wins gold in the men's time trial at the Commonwealth Games, with Welshman Geraint Thomas claiming bronze days after completing the Tour de France.

England cyclist Alex Dowsett has won gold in the men's 40km time trial at the Commonwealth Games.

Stepping into the shoes of Sir Bradley Wiggins, the 25-year-old Team Sky rider pipped Australia's Rohan Dennis and Geraint Thomas of Wales in Glasgow.

Dowsett's powerful final two sections helped him eat away at the five seconds that separated him and Dennis in the middle stages, and he maintained his lead for the remaining 6.5km.

He eventually crossed the line in a time of 47:41.78, with Dennis and Olympic medallist Thomas, who only finished participating in the Tour de France last week, 9.3s and 14.04s behind respectively.

Scotland's defending champion David Millar was always off the pace and ended up finishing eighth on his career swansong, with Wales rider Steve Cummings a place ahead of him in seventh.
