Chris Horner has become the oldest winner of a Grand Tour by riding to victory in the Vuelta a Espana.
The 41-year-old, who is also the first man from the United States to clinch the red jersey, is nine years older than the previous record holder, Tony Rominger, who won the Giro d'Italia in 1995.
The Radioshack Leopard rider completed the tour in a time of 84 hours, 36 minutes and four seconds, which was 37 seconds better than reigning Giro champion Vincenzo Nibali of Italy.
Home favourite Alejandro Valverde came in third place, although his disappointment was tempered by clinching the green jersey in the points classification. He finished ahead of compatriot Joaquim Rodriguez of Team Katusha.
France's Nicolas Edet was crowned 'King of the Mountains', while the Basque-based Euskaltel won the team classification.
