Spaniard Valverde bounced back from finishing fourth in the Tour de France to take the win, finishing 14 seconds ahead of Dutchman Bauke Mollema and compatriot Joaquim Rodriguez, who finished second and third respectively.

Frenchman Tony Gallopin, who won the race last year, finised fifth at 26sec.

Valverde won the same one-day race along the Basque coastline in 2008.
