British Cycling's Shane Sutton rules out Mark Cavendish return for Rio Olympics

British Cycling technical director Shane Sutton holds no hope of Mark Cavendish competing at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

British Cycling technical director Shane Sutton does not expect Mark Cavendish to compete on the track at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

The 29-year-old is in his final season with Belgian Etixx - Quick-Step team, but he is keen to continue his career on the road.

"I would say that Cav is a no," Sky Sports News quotes Sutton as saying. "We would have opened the door to Cav, of course.

"He was one of them born with the gift – technically, he can do anything. He has been a world champion on the track, the greatest road sprinter of all time.

"But unfortunately I think it's the end of the road for Cav. He has made his decision not to entertain it and that's fine. It's a shame."

Cavendish is a three-time world champion for Great Britain and also has a Commonwealth gold medal to his name.
