Great Britain wins first medal

Team GB finally make an impact on the Olympics medal table with Lizzie Armitstead's second-place finish in the women's road race.

Team GB have finally got onto the medals table as Lizzie Armitstead claimed silver in the women's road race.

Netherlands rider Marianne Vos, who is renowned as one of the fastest finishers in world cycling, took the top honour ahead of Armitstead and Russia's Olga Zabelinskaya.

The trio had opened up a 26-second gap on the peloton with less than 30km to go, and they went from strength to strength to ensure each of them won a medal.

American time-trial specialist Kristin Armstrong led the attempt to claw the lead group back but the breakway trio proved too strong.
