Nathan Aspinall brings himself back into Premier League contention with victory on Week Five in Exeter.

Nathan Aspinall has catapulted himself up the Premier League standings with victory on Week Five in Exeter.

After a winless opening three weeks, Aspinall reached the final in Newcastle last week to keep himself off bottom spot, but he went one better in the South West on Thursday night.

Aside from finding himself 3-1 down to Peter Wright in their quarter-final tie, Aspinall was largely dominant in his matches, also against Luke Humphries and Rob Cross.

Wright was defeated by a 6-4 scoreline before world champion Luke Humphries was edged out 6-5, Aspinall leading 5-1 before taking out 160 in the deciding leg to progress.

The final versus Cross was more one-sided, missed doubles allowing Aspinall to come through 6-2 in another match that featured him posting a 160 checkout.

Aspinall now moves up to eight points, just one point adrift of Luke Littler and Cross who are on nine, with Littler having thrashed Michael Smith 6-2 before losing to Cross.

Meanwhile, Michael van Gerwen was hoping to become the first player to win four nights in a row, yet his evening was brought to an early end by Humphries in the opening match of the evening, the Dutchman going down 6-3.

Gerwyn Price is now second bottom after losing 6-1 to Cross, who averaged 109.69 in what was a ruthless performance.
