Justin Pipe has suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at the hands of Australian representative Laurence Ryder in the opening round of the PDC World Championship.
Ryder, who used to be based in the East Midlands, had been pegged back after winning the opening set, but he outperformed the 17th seed in a one-sided decider to move through to the last 32, where he could play Terry Jenkins.
Andy Smith, seeded 28, also bowed out of the tournament after suffering a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Belgian thrower Ronny Huybrechts.
However, Robert Thornton and Ronnie Baxter avoided first-round exits as they came through two potentially tough contests against Andrew Gilding and Daryl Gurney respectively.
Thornton dropped just two legs in overcoming the world number 39, while Baxter dug deep to record a 3-1 win over Gurney, who had recovered from a 3-0 deficit to beat Scott Mackenzie 4-3 in the preliminary round.
