Phil Taylor overcomes slow start to beat Kevin Painter

Phil Taylor is through to the third round of the World Championship with a 4-1 victory over Kevin Painter.

Phil Taylor has earned a place in the third round of the World Championship with a 4-1 triumph over Kevin Painter.

The 16-time world champion started slowly and conceded the first set to Painter, but he gradually improved to edge into the lead.

Taylor then hit a 170 checkout to move closer to victory before he eased through the fifth set to set up a match with either Mervyn King or Jelle Klaasen.

Earlier in the evening, Adrian Lewis continued his impressive run of form with a 4-0 demolition of Andrew Gilding.

The two-time winner dropped just two legs and hit eight maximums on his way to a routine win, which sets up a last-16 clash with Mensur Suljovic.

Peter Wright also progressed by a 4-0 scoreline as he comfortably saw off the challenge of Ronny Huybrechts.
