Jack Laugher qualifies second, Chris Mears out in China

Jack Laugher finishes second in the men's 3m semi-final at the diving World Cup, while teammate Chris Mears is eliminated.

Young British diver Jack Laugher has qualified in second place for the final of the men's 3m springboard at the diving World Cup in Shanghai.

The 19-year-old performed consistently over the six rounds - at one point leading the pack after an impressive reverse 3-1/2 somersault tuck with a score of 92.75 - to post a final tally of 507.00.

He was beaten by China's Cao Yuan, on 524.10, but edged ahead of fellow Chinese contender He Chong, who was forced to settle for third with 504.00.

Laugher's teammate Chris Mears struggled from the off, posting just 57.00 for his most ambitious dive - the forward 4-1/2 somersault tuck - in the sixth round for a total of 412.00 and a 15th-place finish, ruling him out of tomorrow's final.

Elsewhere, the USA's Nick McCrory rallied from a shaky start to finish fifth overall, while Canada's Francois Imbeau-Dulac rounded out the pack with a score of just 316.65.
