Former culture secretary Nadine Dorries has been named as a special guest commentator on Channel 4's election night coverage next week.

During her year in charge of the DCMS from 2021 to 2022, Dorries announced controversial plans to privatise Channel 4, arguing that it would be the best route to secure the broadcaster's future.

The move was met with heavy resistance from many of those in the media industry and the wider public - and she sparked further fury when in a select committee meeting she appeared to misunderstand Channel 4's funding model, falsely claiming that it was in receipt of public funds.

The plans were swiftly dropped by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak after he took office, and now almost two years later, Channel 4 has enlisted Dorries to provide analysis of what looks set to be a heavy defeat for her former party, the Conservatives.

C4 news head Louisa Compton said: "Nobody can deny that Nadine Dorries, as with all our other politicians appearing on the night, is a household name who will have a unique take on events as they unfold – and I'm sure our audience will be interested in what she has to say."

Channel 4's coverage begins at 9.45pm on July 4 - 15 minutes before the polls close - and will run through until 9am the next morning, with Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Emily Maitlis serving as the main anchors alongside The Rest Is Politics' Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell.

Other contributors include former Conservative chancellors Kwasi Kwarteng and Nadim Zahawi, Labour veteran Harriet Harman, former LibDem leader Sir Vince Cable and Reform UK's Ann Widdecombe.
