NBC is reportedly considering a major move that would see it scrap scheduling the 10pm hour of primetime.

NBC is reportedly considering scrapping its third hour of primetime in what would be a major move in the US broadcast market.

The cost-cutting move would free up seven hours a week that would be either partially or totally handed back to local affiliates.

According to the Wall Street Journal, as part of the change, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon would move from 11.30pm to an earlier time of 11pm or even 10.30pm.

An NBC spokeswoman told the publication: "We are always looking at strategies to ensure that our broadcast business remains as strong as possible.

"As a company, our advantage lies in our ability to provide audiences with the content they love across broadcast, cable and streaming."

The changes, which could come in as soon as a year's time, would require the network to move any retained 10pm shows to earlier in the evening.

Current programmes in the slot include Chicago PD, Law & Order: Organized Crime and the reboot of Quantum Leap.
