Original Coronation Street cast member Ernst Walder dies at the age of 94, it is confirmed.

Ernst Walder - one of the original members of the Coronation Street cast - has died at the age of 94, it has been confirmed.

The actor played the part of Ivan Cheveski, a Polish national and the husband of Elsie Tanner's daughter Linda, from the soap's inception in 1960 through to 1967.

Walder died on September 6 last year but news of his death only emerged today on social media via former Corrie writer Daran Little.

"Very sad to read of the passing of dearest Ernst Walder," he wrote.

"An original C St cast member who quickly became Tony Warren's boyfriends before Tony caught him in bed with another cast member.

"Ernst used to send my sons chocolates every Christmas and was the loveliest man."

Walder's death leaves Bill Roache as the only original Corrie cast member not to have died either on screen or in real life.
