Michael French is to make a return to EastEnders more than 30 years after he first appeared as David Wicks.
The character was central to some of the show's iconic plotlines in the '90s, most notably when he embarked upon an affair with Cindy (Michelle Collins), the wife of his half-brother Ian (Adam Woodyatt).
After his initial stint, David has returned to the show on a handful of occasions - the most recent coming in May 2014 as his relationship with Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson) broke down.
David's return to Walford later this year is believed to be only for a short number of episodes but he is bound to cause a stir with both Cindy and Ian now back on the Square.
"David Wicks is undoubtedly one of EastEnders' most beloved rogues, and we are thrilled to welcome the talented Michael French back to the legendary role as we lead up to the show's 40th anniversary," said exec producer Chris Clenshaw.
"David's character was never shy of drama during his previous stints, and I can assure you this return will be no different."
French added: "I feel honoured to be asked to reprise the role of David Wicks once again. It may only be a brief visit, but we know from his past that David never fails to create a lot of drama in a very short time."
David is one of several characters returning for short stints ahead of next February's 40th anniversary, with Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman) also due back later this year and Ian's ex-wife Jane (Laurie Brett) having made a previously-announced comeback earlier this week.
