Dune director Denis Villeneuve has revealed that the upcoming third film will be his final one in the franchise.
The sci-fi epic, which stars Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, was a huge hit at the box office, bringing in over $1 billion combined for the first two movies.
That success led to a third film - Dune: Messiah - being greenlit, with Villeneve helming the project, but in a new interview he has admitted that any further adaptations of the Frank Herbert novels will have to come from someone else.
"Listen, if Dune: Messiah happens, it will have been many years for me on Arrakis, and I would love to do something else," he told Vanity Fair.
"I think that it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in Messiah, there are the seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else afterwards, because they are beautiful books.
"They are more difficult to adapt. They become more and more esoteric. It's a bit more tricky to adapt, but I'm not closing the door. I will not do it myself, but it could happen with someone else."
Dune: Messiah is expected for release at some point in 2026, while a TV prequel spinoff called Dune: Prophecy is due to premiere this November.
